Explain Rehabilitation Counselling in Education

This type of counseling is carried out for the persons who have some kind of
handicap or disturbance. Rehabilitation counselling has the following philosophical framework:

1. All individuals posses human dignity and worth regardless of their disabilities or limitations.

2. Disabled individuals can become self-sufficient and can contribute to society,

3. Productive activity, employment and/ or maximum vocational independence are important psychological benefit to individuals.

4. Individuals ‘participation and determination of their own plans and destinies are essential elements in rehabilitation

5. Diagnostic techniques. therapeutic interventions, environmental alteration, and activation of services for clients can be combined to produce effective results. Porter (1981) has listed key facts which provide an overview of the handicapped people that may need specialized rehabilitation services.  Some of these are

  •  one in eleven is handicapped
  • disability increases with age.
  • the disabled population is considerably older than the general population.
  • handicapped people have less schooling than non-handicapped.
  • disabilities limit the work capabilities
  • fewer handicapped people are employed than non-handicapped.
  • handicapped people have lower earnings than non-handicapped ones.
  • disabled people with jobs held proportionately fewer professional. technical and managerial jobs than did the general population.
  • Disability takes a variety of forms

Mental illness is one of the causes of disability. Rehabilitation services are rendered for people with psychiatric disorders. psychoneurotic disorders, orthopedic disabilities retardation., Rehabilitation visual impairments clients, hearing need a wide impairment range of, cardiovascular services from health disabilities care,applied mental psychology, educational professionals.

Goldenson (1978) divides rehabilitation services medical into

(1) professionals medical specialists.

(2) ( professionals) non-medical are specialists supported

(3) By allied special medical educators and, social para workers, rehabilitation psychologists, vocational educators, work adjustment co-administrators coordinators. job, art therapists placement, corrective specialists therapists, speech, clinical pathologist psychologists and. occupational audiologists. The rehabilitation counsellor coordinates the efforts of these professionals in addition to developing and maintaining a counselling relationship with handicapped clients.

Handicapped persons need counseling in life skills. Life skills include personal skills, domestic skills, dealing with social institutions which ultimately help in transition to the world of work. Rehabilitation workers are often concerned with enabling a person with a disability to re-enter the workforce as an end goal. But there are many hindrances that are beyond the control of rehabilitation counsellors. These may be physical barriers, etc,  attitude barriers, procedural barriers.

To help a client counsellor should develop an insight into the client: establish short and long term goals and identify and implement a plan to remove the discrepancy between current client functional level and the level necessary for goal achievement. The client is focused of rehabilitation counselling because the client has to make decisions himself and take actions. For this there is a general procedure is as follows for counselling as follows:

  • To know the client
  • What work has he done in past?
  • What is his disability?
  • What are the financial responsibilities of the client?
  • What is he doing currently?
  • When does he return to work?
  • What are the financial responsibilities of the client?
  • What is he doing currently?
  •  When does he return to work?
  • How does he feel about work?
  • How successful has he been at past jobs?
  • What limitations does his disability impose?
  •  What work skills does he currently posses.
  • What are his interest areas?.
  • What are his feelings toward and abilities for further training?
